11,000 scientists warn of a global climate emergency

More than 11,000 scientists warn that the Earth is facing "unimaginable pain" due to the climate crisis and needs urgent measures to cope with this situation.

"We clearly and explicitly declare that the Earth is in a climate emergency," the scientists said. "To ensure a sustainable future, we must change the way we live. This requires major changes in the way society operates and impacts natural ecosystems."

"The climate crisis has come and is getting more serious than most scientists expect. It threatens the natural ecosystem and the fate of man."

The warning was published in the journal BioScience on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the first world climate conference (held in Geneva in 1979). The statement is based on research results by dozens of scientists and is recognized by more than 11,000 scientists from 153 countries around the world.

The scientists say urgent changes need to be made including stopping population growth , not exploiting fossil fuels in the ground, not destroying forests and reducing meat consumption.

Professor William Ripple from Oregon State University, the lead author of the study, said he started the study when he witnessed the weather becoming more and more severe.

The main purpose of the alert is to provide a full range of important indicators on the causes and consequences of climate change, instead of just having carbon emissions and increasing surface temperatures.

"A broader set of indicators should be monitored, including population growth, meat consumption, reduced greenery coverage, energy consumption and associated annual economic losses. to extreme weather, " said study co-author Thomas Newsome from the University of Sydney.

Other equally worrying signs are the boom in air travel demand, world GDP growth, and "the climate crisis is closely related to the wealthy lifestyle".

Scientists have noted some positive signs such as reducing global birth rate, increasing use of solar energy, wind and reducing fossil fuel exploitation.

According to scientists, a series of urgent measures need to be implemented including more efficient use of energy, applying carbon tax, stabilizing global population growth (currently the world receives 200,000 more people / day), stopping destroying nature, restoring forests and mangroves to absorb CO2, eating less meat, and changing economic growth targets.
