3 dangerous diseases spread from mice

Mice can spread 35 diseases, in Vietnam there are 3 groups of diseases including sodoku, hanta virus disease and leptospira disease.

At the Central Hospital of Tropical Diseases (Hanoi), doctors are scattered throughout the year. If the doctor does not pay attention, it is easy to misdiagnose the disease, while early detection of treatment is very simple.

When bitten by mice , people can become infected with a disease called sodoku. The cause is a spirochete called spirillum minus.

A sudden onset of illness with a high fever, chills, fever into episodes, a non-cyclic fever, alternating periods of no fever, may be hemorrhagic. At the bite site, external skin lesions can go away on their own, but the inside is necrotic and reacts with regional lymph nodes. Patients show signs of myalgia, arthralgia and often lead to arthritis. More severe, patients with headaches, hallucinations, delirium lead to coma. The fever may last several months. Mortality rate is about 5-10%.

Doctor Nguyen Trung Cap, Head of the Emergency Department, Central Hospital of Tropical Diseases (Hanoi) said that every year, the hospital receives about 10-20 patients with sodoku caused by mice. Initially simple bite so many patients do not notice. Besides, if there is an open wound, people clean up in places with feces, rat urine can also be transmitted.

Hantavirus disease

According to Dr. Grant, this is a good disease spread from mice to humans;mainly transmitted through the respiratory tract ; People who breathe in dust, feces, rats or rat urine may become infected. If rats infected with banta bite, they can also transmit the disease.

Ratio of rats in some Northern provinces carrying this virus is about 5-15% according to statistics of the Central Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology. The risk of infection mainly from wild rats, house mice may be infected by contact with wild mice.

The disease starts after 10-20 days, the patient has fever, then muscle pain, headache, anorexia, nausea. Many cases of abdominal pain are easily mistaken for abdominal pain due to other causes.

Few patients can get worse as pneumonia, kidney failure, and some heart failure. Detecting late disease, mortality rate can be up to 6-10%. Viral disease should not have a specific treatment.

Leptospira disease

The disease is spread through mouse urine. Mice carrying this bacterium urinate into the sewer, the wading people with limbs have wounds that are easy to penetrate, or encounter workers who have to wade dirty water. In the rainy season, sometimes the water is swollen, people wading dirty water can be infected.

After this infection 7-10 days, the patient has signs of fever, possible nosebleeds, conjunctival hemorrhage, jaundice. Most people recover from the disease, some serious events, which can lead to kidney failure, liver failure, coagulopathy, bleeding.

Early detection of disease is simple treatment with common antibiotics such as penicillin and teracylin. In contrast, late diagnosis, when patients with renal impairment treatment is very difficult, high mortality rates.
