According to Business Insider, search engine Ecosia grew 1,150% of downloads of search applications and browser extensions in just one day thanks to the spillover effect from the Amazon rainforest.

Ecosia spends most of its profits on tree planting projects in countries like Brazil, Ethiopia, Madagascar and so far, the company has revealed it has planted 65 million trees.

According to the company, the number of Ecosia installations has increased dramatically on August 22. This is also the time when the international media reported loudly about the fire in the Amazon rainforest.

Ecosia told Business Insider that usually they only have about 20,000 downloads of browser apps and extensions daily. Meanwhile, the number of unique downloads in August 22 has reached 250,000. The company expects that if the situation continues to be positive, Ecosia will reach the milestone of one million downloads in August alone.

'We had a group meeting. People are impressed by the growth numbers but are not happy about forest fires. So it has created excitement, but it is still a tragic event , 'said Christian Kroll, founder of Ecosia, in response to Business Insider.

Kroll is a student of business administration with the interest of tinkering with computers before becoming an environmentalist. Ecosia was founded in 2009 after the Kroll's trip to Nepal and South America to learn about the ongoing destruction of the natural environment.

'I do not really understand climate change as well as many problems caused by globalization. But after living there, I decided I wanted to do something to help people. In my opinion, planting trees is useful for both people and the environment , 'Kroll said.

Kroll added that Ecosia has become the leading downloaded iOS app in Brazil on August 22 and also has a high download rankings in some other countries.

Users who show interest in the Amazon forest fire on social networks are said to play an important role in helping Ecosia's downloads increase dramatically.

Business Insider said, Instagram users are encouraging friends to download this search application to help support the forest fire in Amazon. Besides the hashtag #PrayforAmazonia, Ecosia application is also constantly mentioned by Twitter users in an effort to help 'the planet's lungs'.
