Astounding images of the ship 'freezing time' after nearly 200 years of sinking under the sea

HMS Terror and HMS Erebus sailed out to sea in 1845 with the goal of finding a route through the Northwest Corridor . However, after being trapped in ice, all sailors perished and both ships were wrecked.

In 2014 and 2016, HMS Erebus and HMS Terror were found in the deep waters of Terror Bay in Nunavut, Canada.

Being submerged in the cold deep water made HMS Terror's body almost intact compared to the time it was sunk more than 170 years ago.

In early August 2019, a team of researchers from the Canadian National Parks Department dived into the ocean to explore the 20 compartments of the ship.

Remote-recorded (ROV) images show the ship's artifacts such as unbroken plates, firearms still in their infancy, and upright cylinders in their compartments. The storage is covered with a layer of alluvium.

"In our impression, it feels like the ship has just been left behind and forgotten by time , " said researcher Ryan Harris.

During this dive, the team did not bring any antiques. They believed that important documents could be in the drawer of Captain Francis Crozier's cabin, one of the ship's best preserved places.

This area has never been explored since HMS Terror was sunk.

Recent data will help researchers continue to explore the shipwreck nearly 200 years ago with the remains.
