The research team from Lund University, Sweden, found evidence confirming the existence of chemical elements with atomic numbers 115. Experiments were conducted at GSI facilities in Germany, the results of the Previous measurements made by the Russian research team, MyScience reported.

Mr. Dirk Rudolph, professor of atomic physics at Lund University, said: "This is a very successful experiment, it is one of the most important achievements in this area in recent years."

In addition to observing new chemical elements, researchers also have access to data that gives them greater insight into the structure and properties of super-heavy atomic nuclei.

During the experiment, scientists bombarded a thin layer of americium membranes by calcium ions, which were able to measure photons accompanied by alpha decay of the new element. Certain energies of photons coincide with the expected energy of X-radiation, which is the element's "fingerprint".

The new superheavy element has yet to be named. A committee of members of the International Physical and Chemical Association will examine the results to decide whether to conduct further experiments before recognizing the new element.

Evidence of the 115th chemical element will be presented in Physical Review Letters in the end of August.
