Discover new ginger species in Quang Ngai

Scientists from the Institute of Tropical Biology have just announced a plant belonging to the ginger family in Nghia Hanh district, Quang Ngai.

The new species is found at a height of 70 to 670m above sea level at Dau Mountain. They are ginger Skornickova , scientific name is Zingiber skorkickovae NS Li. The name is to honor Dr. Jana Leong-Škorničková of the Singapore Botanical Garden - who has a lot of contributions in researching ginger plants in Vietnam and in the world.

The identification feature of Skornickova ginger is an inverted egg-shaped or an elliptical egg-shaped, wavy face. Flowers are 7.5-9.2 cm long, the lobes are in the shape of triangular eggs, inner concave, pale yellow, with translucent veins, sharp tips.

Ginger (Zingiber Mill.) Has about 144 species, distributed throughout tropical and subtropical Asia. In Vietnam there are about 31 known species, including the newly discovered species.
