The Athens Institute of Geophysics in Greece announced that the magnitude 5.8 earthquake occurred yesterday at 1244 GMT. Its epicenter was under the Aegean Sea and about 37 km from the sea floor. The seismic earth shook the southwestern region of Turkey and the Greek island of Rhodes, the AP reported.

Turkey's Kandilli Observatory said the earthquake rocked some cities in Turkey. Two aftershocks, with a magnitude of 4.9 and 4.7 on the Richter scale, appeared after the earthquake.

Police on Rhodes Island said they had not received information about human and property damage. Officials in Turkey said more than a dozen people in the country were injured by jumping out of buildings when an earthquake struck.

The Greek island of Rhodes and the southwestern region of Turkey are located in an area with an unstable geological structure, so they often suffer from earthquakes.
