With most of the area located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, Mexico has often suffered from strong earthquakes in recent years. In December 2011, a magnitude 6.7 earthquake also rocked the southern state of Guerrero, causing many casualties.

In 1985, the magnitude 8.1 earthquake in Mexico City also killed more than 10,000 people and destroyed part of the city.

So far, many people in the capital still live in fear of this situation repeating.
