Endangered diamond frog in Madagascar

According to the latest news on Sci-news, researchers have discovered a new diamond frog that lives in the high forests of the Sorata Mountains, north of Madagascar. Only a few people know about diamond frogs. But there is a clear trait about this frog, most of them live in caves.

This is why these frogs often have short limbs, rounded bodies, protrusions of the forelimbs and the posterior limbs are often hard. This feature is called " nodule " that supports them in burrowing.

However, the newly discovered diamond frog has a different way of life than the burrowing lifestyle of most other individuals. Dr. Mark Scherz from Bavaria, Germany and colleagues found that this new species not only has longer legs but also a big difference between the hip bones, which makes them different from the same species.

The researchers decided to name them Rhombophryne longicrus because of its long legs. "The name of this species is an immutable noun that is assembled from a genus and comes from Latin, longus means long, crus means foot," Dr. Schez explained.

The Rhombophryne longicrus is thought to be a microendemic because of its distinctive characteristics. They are facing a great risk of extinction due to deforestation and forest degradation taking place in this area.

"We recommend that the frog Rhombophryne longicrus be included in the IUCN red list of B1ab endangered status (iii). listed on the protection list , "the scientists said.
