Generators from waste water

US researchers have recently introduced prototype devices that they believe are capable of producing electricity from waste water.

The team of experts from Pennsylvania State University says the new technology can also filter waste water into clean water, particularly for developing countries.

According to a study in the journal Science, they used a process called reverse dialysis (RED), where fresh water and seawater were poured into filtered basins that activated the charge. as a case study in the Netherlands.

To reduce the number of filters needed, experts combine RED with the technology called MFCs. This technology uses biological material inside the waste water to generate electricity.

The University of Pennsylvania team also removed sea water by using ammonium bicarbonate as a substitute solution, meaning that the application of this technology could reach out to communities close to the sea.
