Russian ophthalmologist Tatyana Shilova said the condition was unusual but not the only case. The doctor determined that the disease may be genetic or inflammation of the eye, causing changes in the composition of tears. In a tear there is protein, fat, trace elements, ionic composition. If the salt concentration increases can accelerate the speed of the crystallization process. Protein in tears can also increase the thickness of the tear.

The doctor also warned that crystal-like tears may be a sign of other problems. Crystals appear not only from the mucous membrane of the eye but they can form in other organs, causing danger, requiring further research.
