The long history of the Self-possessed Tree began in the middle of the 16th century. It lived longevity (longevity compared to human beings, if not compared to a tree) until 1942 it was cut down. But from its oak seed, one planted a new tree, at the very place where the Self-possessed Tree fell. This place has become a local tourist attraction, not to mention calling it America's most famous tree family.

The first story about Self-possessed Tree appeared on August 12, 1890 on the front page of the Athens Weekly Banner. The article is about a tree living at the home of Colonel William Henry Jackson, a powerful individual and having a local relationship. Mr. Jackson, because of his desire to retain his beautiful childhood memories around the white oak, transferred the ownership of the land to the tree itself. According to many sources, this act took place between 1820 and 1832. The article also added that at that time, in 1890, very few people survived to know this or even see a transfer of paper. above land.

A lot of mixed opinions revolve around this, but conclude that "the community has recognized this." Based on that, the community living here declared that this tree actually owned the land and owned itself. Again, this tree is always recognized and protected by law.

The Self-owned Tree lives peacefully until 1906, the soil at its foot is eroded. Entrepreneur George Foster Peabody stood out to buy new land, put stakes and leash around, put a memorial board there to protect the tree "citizens". However, in a snow storm in 1907, the tree was severely damaged. The community takes care of it but the tree has begun to rot and weaken.

On October 9, 1942, the people decided to take the tree to the final resting place, rewarding them between 150 and 400 years old, with the height of the mountain at 30 meters. Using the own oak seed of the Self Tree, they replant a new seedling at the place where their father stood. But according to the rules, it is clear, this young tree inherits the inheritance that the previous life left: it is the land on which it is standing.
