India successfully developed the world's first iron-ion battery

The long way to replace li-ion batteries (and reduce the exploitation of rare earths) begins with a small success.

A team of researchers from the Madras Indian Institute of Technology has just developed the world's first iron-ion battery technology. They use low carbon steel to make anode, vanadium pentoxide (V 2 O 5 ) to cathode; Thanks to the large molecular distance, V 2 O 5 can allow iron to move easily. Besides, the iron-ion battery also has an electrode made from iron chloride.

When iron-ion batteries are compared to li-ion batteries at night, the benefits are immediately seen: iron-ion batteries are cheaper because the battery component is more abundant than lithium, initial reports show that iron-ion batteries may have a larger capacity, more stable structure.

Despite repeated charging and discharging, there is no dendrite inside the lithium ion battery - lithium fibers that cause short-circuiting of lithium-ion batteries. Moreover, the production of li-ion batteries must be done in a strictly controlled environment, due to its explosive nature. Iron-ion batteries are different, one can assemble them in conventional factories.

It seems that the name contains the word 'iron', which speaks of simplicity and roughness but is an important element in the development of humanity.

At the present time, this 'made in India' battery is special, which retains a decent capacity when it goes through 150 charge-discharge cycles. It will take a long time for us to see the first smartphone device with an iron-ion battery. Modern technology still has to rely on lithium-ion batteries until it is unclear.
