In the latest images recorded, Mars is more like a 'creamy biscuit' than a red planet.

Danielson crater. In the winter, thin layers of carbon dioxide cover the sand dunes at the poles. In the spring, this ice evaporates and defrost occurs vertically from the bottom of the sand dune. This process "trapped" gases in the area between the ice and sand.As the ice melted, air gushed out from the cracks and dragged along the sand. That creates an image with a dark, cookie-like area next to the 'creamy' light. On the right side of the image are crescent-shaped sand dunes merged into 'wind ridges' of wind direction.Based on these images, the scientists identified secondary winds as the sand dune shaping factor.NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter also captured images at the 67.5km-wide Danielson crater located southwest of Mars.In the crater, rocks and sand were frozen after sticking together. The sand here is blue, scattered on the ridges. The amount of sediment in the crater has changed over the years with some areas not eroding while others have been completely wiped out. This causes undulating rock-like layers.(Photo: CNN).
