Archaeologists have opened the lid of 30 3,000-year-old coffins discovered in Egypt's Asasif cemetery and were surprised to find the mummies inside intact, perfectly preserved.

The ancient coffins were opened on October 19, a week after they were unearthed in Egypt's Asasif cemetery, where the ancient city of Thebes once existed.

The archaeological team accidentally discovered coffins in the Asasif urban area, the Egyptian government declared. Asasif belongs to the ancient city of Thebes (now Luxor) - once the bustling, crowded capital of ancient Egypt.

The ancient coffins are estimated to be 3,000 years old, older than most other ancient ruins in the area. However, when found, they are still sealed and intact, even paintings and inscriptions are intact proving they are very well preserved.

Archaeologists opened the coffins during a ceremony on October 19 and suddenly discovered mummies perfectly preserved inside. The intricate engravings show that these mummies in life were once very well-respected, beloved people, possibly priests and children.

The coffins will be restored and displayed at the Great Egyptian Museum, which is expected to open near the pyramid of Giza next year.
