Patients waiting for first transplant to convince the world

Valery Spiridonov, the first person in the world volunteered to join a head transplant experiment to fly to the US on June 9 to see a surgeon and convince medical professionals.

The first person to join a head transplant surgery wants to convince the world

According to Inquistir, this is the first time Valery has met Italian surgeon Sergio Canavero . Both will attend a medical conference held in Annapolis, Maryland state capital.

"We will speak together. I will speak for myself. I hope this trip will promote transplants, convince the medical community and be supported by the scientific community, " Valery said.

He hopes to find a suitable donation body within the next two years. " I do not rush to operate immediately, but if all goes as planned, the transplant will be done in the next two years, in 2017," the Russian volunteer said.

" The transplants depend a lot on the day-to-day conference. Ideally, do it in the US," said Valery. " I am not only a patient in surgery. Above all, I am a scientist, an engineer, I am determined to convince people - medical experts - that surgery is necessary. I'm not crazy, and don't rush to cut my head, trust me. "

He is currently a computer scientist and works for an information technology firm. Valery has inherited muscular atrophy and the disease has worsened over time.

Usually, the infected person does not live more than 20 years. Valery believes that this is not only a great opportunity for him to extend his life, but can also contribute to a future of scientific research in the future, no matter what the outcome is.

According to RT, Valery's surgery will be carried out by neurosurgeon Italy, Sergio Canavero , which is expected to last 36 hours with the participation of 150 doctors and nurses. The patient's brain is cooled to 10-15 degrees Celsius to prolong the life of the cell in the absence of oxygen. After that, Canavero used a scalpel to cut through the spinal cord and used a special bio-glue to connect the head to the new body. After surgery, Valery will be in a coma state for 3-4 weeks and immunosuppressed.

In a statement earlier this year, Canavero said he could perform the world's first transplant in the next two years and confirmed that within a year, the first transplant recipient could speak and walk normally. . Canavero believes that the method will succeed because he uses a very sharp blade, limiting the risk of spinal cord injury. (Usually, this injury will cause paralysis). He called the material used to connect the nerves to be a " magic component" .

Richard Borgens, director of Purdue University's Center for Polio Research, said that Canavero's idea is not guaranteed."There is no evidence that the connection between the spinal cord and the brain will make motor or sensory function work effectively after the head is paired ," he said.

45 years ago, American expert Robert J. White performed a monkey head transplant , but it only lived for 8 days. The monkey cannot breathe and move because the spinal cord at the head and body is not connected.
