Strong earthquake shakes Taiwan

A strong magnitude 5.6 earthquake occurred in northeastern Taiwan (China) on May 12. People in Taipei City also felt shaking.

Reuters quoted information from the US Geological Survey (USGS) that the epicenter of the 5.6-magnitude earthquake was 14km northeast of the coastal town of Suo.

Meanwhile, South China Morning Post reported the announcement of Taiwan Weather Bureau, a magnitude 5.8 earthquake, occurring in waters near Yilan district, northeast of the island and at a depth of 17.5 km. Taipei and several other locations, including Hualien County, feel vibrations with a magnitude of 4 on the Richter scale.

There have been no reports of injuries or damage to people and homes. At New Taipei City, some bricks of the building fell down, causing a pedestrian to be slightly injured, following SET TV.

Taiwan often suffers from earthquakes. In February, the magnitude 6.4 earthquake caused a large apartment building in the south of the territory to collapse, more than 100 people were killed.
