Professor Katie Allen of Murdoch Children's Research Institute and research leader, said the results reinforce the hypothesis that sunlight, more specifically vitamin D, may be a factor affecting the development. Development of food allergies and eczema.

"We know people in Queensland are more exposed to the sun, and the sun produces more vitamin D on your skin ," Herald Sun newspaper quoted Professor Allen as saying.

'The study supports the current hypothesis that the further away you are from the equator, the more likely you are to suffer from food allergies and eczema' , she explained.

Although the Australian team found a link between vitamin D and eczema and food allergies, they have yet to establish a causal relationship between them.
