Surviving an explosion: It's not as easy as on the movie!

It seems that Hollywood movies have made many people look down on the fear of explosions. In fact, you won't be able to "cool" the next step like action movie superheroes.

In the movie, especially the Hollywood action movies, we often see the protagonist acting very cool: throwing cigarette butts into the gas tank and turning on his heel, leaving a sea of fire behind accompanied by the deafening bangs. Really cool!

Is the scene in the movie cool?

In fact, an explosion is more dangerous than we thought, not the same as in the movie.

An explosion not only has smoke

The label effect of a bomb explosion is fire and smoke. However, things that endanger us include two elements: fragment, and shock wave (blast wave) .

The first is the debris. When an object explodes - whether it is a bomb or a gas tank, the flames cause a sudden surge in temperature, melting the crust, creating a rain of hot metal particles in all directions.

They can easily break a wall, so human flesh is nothing. Moreover, because of all directions, the victims who stood far away were still likely to be affected. That's why in most explosions, what causes the most casualties is the shrapnel.

Next is the blast wave. In fact, this is a factor that everyone takes lightly, even without concern when it comes to an explosion. However, its damage is not moderate at all.

When an explosion occurs, there will be a large amount of air waves pushed in all directions in an instant. That is the shock.

You know, every time we walk, the body experiences an impact force called air pressure. Over millions of years of evolution, humans and animals possess the body enough to tolerate this pressure.

But when an explosion happens then it is different! Air waves are pushed away at too high a speed, it will form a vacuum in the moment. To fill this gap, the surrounding air will flow in, creating strong winds.

An explosion is definitely extremely dangerous, so there is no way you can walk the same way as in the movie.

To make it easier to visualize, a single change of 5 psi (more than 300g / cm 2 ) is needed, the wind generated has a speed of up to 258 km / h. Meanwhile, an explosion usually has a pressure of about 20 psi, with wind power of 757km / h.

With such pressure, a human body would be lifted, blown away at a speed like being forced into a train. The internal organs were destroyed, the lungs were crushed, the ears bleed . And even if the pressure did not kill them, the victims could still die from hitting hard objects around them.

In short, an explosion is definitely extremely dangerous, so there is no way you can walk the same way as in the movie. So stay away from explosive materials, especially bombs and ancient military weapons. You are playing with your life.
