Taking B vitamins may help reduce harm caused by air pollution

A recent study by American scientists said drinking B vitamins every day could help reduce some of the harms caused by air pollution.

The head of the research, Ms Gia Chung of the University of Colombia's Mailman Community School of Medicine, said B vitamins such as folic acid, vitamin B6 and vitamin B12 play an important role in helping the process turn. Genetic alteration of genes called methylation of DNA , which is involved in cardiovascular disease and cancer, reduces the negative impact of air pollution.

To get this conclusion, the scientists conducted a study of a group of 10 adult volunteers aged between 18 and 60 years old.

Participants must ensure good health, do not smoke and do not take any medicines or supplements.

Every day, each member of the group is given a vitamin B supplement with ingredients including 2.5mg of folic acid, 50mg of vitamin B6 and 1mg of vitamin B12.

After 4 weeks of implementation, the results showed that taking vitamin B helped reduce 28 -76% harm due to exposure of PM2.5 molecules - very small molecules with a diameter of 2.5 micrometers (um) in the air.

Although the project obtained positive results, but Ms. Gia Chung said that this study was only in the early stages, so it is not possible to give a recommendation about taking vitamin B daily , while the appointment of taking vitamins B should be based on each person's condition.

She said that in the short term, it is necessary to maintain a healthy diet with foods rich in vitamin B.
