The bicycle design of 1946 was once thought to be the embodiment of the future

Still a bicycle, but "mixing" a little more electric motor - It seems that if it is supported, electric bicycles will be born sooner than we thought.

This bicycle design, which originated from the idea of Benjamin Bowden, was introduced in the exhibition "Britain Can Make It Better" which took place in 1946. Known simply as "The Classic" (and later) renamed to Spacelander ), Bowden's first model is essentially a bicycle equipped with a motor to support the vehicle's ability to climb the slope.

The aerodynamic shape of the car is expected to lay the foundation for the bicycle development industry to be up to 20 years later. It is true that, until 1960, it was the milestone that the United States officially put into production. However, the biggest and only problem is that no one needs to buy. They think they are outdated and too expensive ($ 90, or as much as $ 730 when it falls into inflation). There are only 500 units on the market.

But at the present time, Spacelander has a precious place in the collection of past nostalgic believers. Not much of the old-fashioned Spacelander existed outside the museum's limits, but it was pretty much the same, and most of the poor quality goods were designed to cheat the bidders.

"Sitting thinking in my office, I came up with the idea of creating an unprecedented breakthrough product," Bowden interviewed in 1993, when he was 87 years old.

"I squeezed my brains to think of a new bike design," he continued. "Usually a bike has two wheels, pedals and is connected together by a traditional frame. With the experience of working in the machinery industry, I decided to improve it, but not necessarily complete. Full foot pedal function should still be retained ".

The picture below is the scene Bowden is describing the model of his future bike idea. But sadly, his fate has never been fulfilled as his will.
