The biting force of the tyrant dinosaur crushed three cars at the same time

The giant tyrant dinosaur can crush prey bone thanks to the bite force and the pressure of the teeth is terribly strong, enough to crush three cars at the same time.

The ability for some carnivorous mammals to crush prey bones with their bite is called extreme osteophagy , according to International Business Times. This ability was observed in today's hyenas, wolves, as well as the giant Tyrant Tyrannosaurus rex .

In the new study, the journal Science Advances on May 17, scientists at Florida State University, USA, built a computer model based on the jaw muscle anatomy of the tyrant dinosaur in order to understand the teeth of How they crush prey bones. They include data to calculate biting force as well as pressure created by teeth.

The results showed that the bite force of the giant tyrant dinosaur measured about 3,630kg, equivalent to the weight of three small cars. Long conical teeth create a bite pressure of 30,300kg / cm 2 , causing the prey to break into pieces.

The ability to crush prey bones helps the tyrant dinosaurs have an advantage over many other carnivorous dinosaurs living at the same time. They also have the ability to eat large dinosaur corpses for nutrition.

"When tyrannical dinosaurs eat prey, such as triceratops, their ability to crush bones allows them to not only get nutrients from meat but also from bone marrow. The tyrant has more energy during meals, " said Gregory Erickson, a member of the research team.

The team said their model could be used in the future to study the dietary mechanisms of many other dinosaurs with more detail.
