'The Chinese leopard species, also known as the Panthera pardus orientalis, is seriously threatened,' the Nature Protection Fund (WWF) warned. WWF conducted statistical work in collaboration with the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS).
Previous statistics vary from 22 to 30 leopards. According to WWF, to ensure the survival of an animal population, there must be at least 100 animals.
The Chinese species is a victim of climate change, smuggling and living in restricted areas. An adult leopard should have an area of 500 km 2 . According to Pavel Fomenko, head of WWF's leopard protection program, Chinese cheetahs often do not have their own animal conservation areas.
