The copper shield can protect the Earth from the solar storm

American scientists have come up with the idea of setting up a large shield in space to protect the Earth from the solar storm.

In order to protect the Earth from the threat of solar storms, which seriously damage the communication system and the global power grid, American scientists propose to install large-scale magnetic field shields, IB Times. reported on October 3.

Solar Storms , including diurnal eruptions (CME) , release charged particles that could disrupt Earth's satellite, electricity and Internet systems, causing serious consequences, home Manasvi Lingam and Avi Loeb science at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics said.

Lingam and Loeb believe that a strong eruption occurred every 100 years, the last time it reached the Earth in 1859, called the Carrington event. This solar storm has badly affected telegraph stations across Europe and North America.

Currently, the world relies heavily on technology to exchange information and maintain operations, from financial markets, to transportation to daily activities. If such a severe solar storm happens again, the consequences will be much greater, not to mention the losses when the world is disconnected.

"We expect that in the next 150 years there will be a CME event that damages as much as the GDP of the entire United States, which is approximately $ 20 trillion. The more the CME happens, the more exponential damage will occur. " Loeb told Gizmodo. The possibility of the next eruption affecting the Earth in the next 10 years is 10%.

The team devised a plan to protect the Earth with a giant shield between the Earth and the Sun. This large size shield is a 100,000-ton copper coil, located 330,000 km from Earth and deflects the Sun's charged particles with magnetic fields thanks to the Lorentz force.

The use of magnet rings will not stop the sunlight from passing through, moreover, it is not necessary to use a large amount of matter, causing engineers to spend a lot of construction and significantly interfere when transporting into space. . Another benefit of copper shields is that people are fully capable of building this system.

Scientists admit that the cost of making shields will not be cheap, but the amount of savings compared to the damage that CME caused when touching the Earth is still very large. However, the ability to complete the shield in time is still worth discussing.

"It may take several decades to build a shield in the universe. The cost of moving the heavy equipment of about 100,000 tons to space may be several hundred billion dollars, much less than the expected damage due to the storm. The Sun caused for a century, " commented Loeb.

The team thinks that this shield can be built in space at the cost of the International Space Station (ISS).
