The funeral rite of cremation was almost 10,000 years ago

On November 23, German and Brazilian scientists announced the discovery of long-standing traces that demonstrate the existence of funeral ritual-style rites, handling of dead bodies or even is eating dead people in Brazil nearly 10,000 years ago.

Research conducted by the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology and the University of Sao Paulo shows that these complex funeral records were made 9,500 years ago at Lapa do Santo, Central Brazil.

The Max Planck Institute's research leader André Strauss admitted that the diversity of burial rites at Lapa by Santo has surprised the experts. From 10,000 years ago, ancient inhabitants in the eastern part of South America had sophisticated techniques in handling the bodies of dead people.

Research results reveal that Santo Lapa residents began using this place to bury people from the years 8,600-8,200 BC. These bodies were all intact, with no signs of intervention after death.

However, around 7400-7200 BC, the ancient people performed burial rituals which, according to experts, "reduced" the body parts.

British Antiquity magazine published the study, showing the techniques for handling deceased bodies including chopping, removing meat or teeth, cremation and possibly even eating dead people.

The burial rites of this period do not include monuments or burial of wealth along with the dead.

Research from 26 graves revealed that the corpses after being processed were continued to be buried under strict rules.

The study identified residents of the region as dynamic, constantly changing groups of burials.
