The highest tree species in the world are threatened

Among the oldest living plants on Earth, giant plants face a range of threats from deforestation, drought and climate change.

Sam (Sequoiadendron giganteum)

According to Discovery News, it grows only in 75 small forests along the mountainside west of the Sierra Nevada range in California, USA.The tallest tree found is 84 m in size. They are being threatened by climate change.Summer is longer and drought makes the snow ice layer not thick enough for young trees to survive.(Photo: Corbis).

Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii)

Named after the first person to discover it, David Douglas, 18th-century Scottish biologist, this plant can be as high as 91 m.It is found in large areas from British Columbia to Mexico.Forests of vast Douglas fir are being destroyed by woodcutter loggers.(Photo: Corbi).

Although found in many parts of Europe, North Africa and West Asia, this plant is often referred to as British oak.It is also imported into the Northeast and Midwestern United States.A tree in Poland recorded more than 42 m tall.In Europe, oak Pendunculate is threatened by wildfires and high winds, according to a European Union report in 2008.
