The killer killed whales from the sky

A group of international scientists found the cause of hundreds of dead whales and drifted to the coast of Argentina.

Find the culprit of whale killing in Argentina

According to Fox News, scientists from the US and Argentina investigated, studied and discovered the culprit behind the whale's death from 2013 to 2014 was seagulls.

The study, published in the journal PLoS One on October 21, said that since the 1970s, gulls off the Valdes, Argentina peninsula, feed from the skin and fat of southern whales . They will wait for the whale to spray the water, then eat the dead skin on the water.

However, in recent years, gulls have become increasingly aggressive when moving to attack whales. They plunged into the hole spraying water on the whale's head for surgery, causing the hole to leak out over time.

According to scientists, in the 1970s, only 2% of mother whales and whales had wounds caused by gulls. After three decades, this number is up to 99%. The mother whale will be more alert and know to hide her back in the water. But whales are inexperienced, making it easy to be the target of gulls.

"Newborn whales 0 - 3 months old who can't hide their backs. Their backs are too small to bend and the current main goal of gulls is newly born babies" , Victoria Rowntree, associate professor at the department of biology studied at the University of Utah, USA, co-author of the study, said.

Although the wound may not take away the life of the whale, the seagull's attack will affect the time it takes to feed and train its skills, forcing them to evade. In addition, injured whales can become infected, dehydrated and many other diseases leading to death.
