The patch heals the wound in diabetic feet

In diabetic patients, foot injuries often take a long time to heal or more serious that it can cause severe ulcers, leading to the limb. The good news is that experts from Stanford University School of Medicine (USA) have recently developed a direct drug patch to help heal wounds quickly.

According to experts, there are two reasons why the wound in diabetic patients' legs is hard to heal. The first is the blockage in blood vessels that limits the amount of oxygen-rich blood to the wound to heal. The second is that diabetics often degrade a protein called HIF-1α, which activates the gene that promotes the formation of capillaries in the wound site. Without good blood vessels, blood cannot be transmitted to damaged tissues for recovery.

In order to overcome this situation, Dr. Geoffrey Gurtner and colleagues developed a HIF-1α-enhancing drug in diabetics. It is used in combination with a drug called deferoxamine , but there is a limitation that it is difficult to completely penetrate the skin when used in cream form. Therefore, the team created a drug-led patch containing countless micro needles that can penetrate the skin surface without causing pain, and slowly bring the drug into the body.

Tests show that this wound bandage heals wounds 14 days faster than topical medications. In addition, by boosting the amount of collagen regenerated at the damaged skin, the quality of wound healing is also better.
