Vietnam and IRRI cooperate to develop rice industry

In the afternoon of May 7, in Hanoi, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Cao Duc Phat and General Director of International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) Robert S.Zeigler signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Scientific Cooperation techniques to develop Vietnam's rice industry.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Minister Cao Duc Phat emphasized that the cooperation between Vietnam and IRRI will mark a new development between the two sides in the field of rice.

This is an area that Viet Nam attaches great importance to development, but in order to continue to develop this strength, it is necessary to solve great challenges.

It is to improve productivity, quality, value added in the rice industry, bringing higher income for rice farmers in the condition of an increasingly narrow area.

On the other hand, Vietnam must be prepared to adapt to climate change which is expected to affect major rice growing areas, first of all in the Mekong Delta.

IRRI Director General Robert S.Zeigler expressed pride in IRRI's contributions to Vietnam's rice production success, and evaluated Vietnam's experience as an example for many other countries to study. internship in agricultural development.

In the coming time, IRRI and Vietnam will work closely together and study climate change for the entire Southeast Asia region.

IRRI is one of the 16 major international agricultural research organizations in the world. Since 1975, IRRI has given Vietnam great help in rice research and production.

According to experts, IRRI's rice varieties or IRRI-derived rice has been cultivated 60-70% of the country's rice area, contributing to improving productivity, yield and quality Vietnam's rice in recent years.

Every year, IRRI supplies Vietnam with thousands of lines, new rice varieties are precious sources of materials for research and breeding of rice varieties. Along with that, thousands of Vietnamese graduate students, trainees and scientists have been trained or funded by IRRI.

IRRI also facilitates Vietnamese Research Institutes to access the world's new research in the field of rice; implementing a number of projects in key areas such as seed production, plant protection, rice nutrition.
