Considered one of the most prominent women in the history of Punjabi writers, Amrita Pritam revealed many details of her personal life in her autobiography Kala Gulab.

According to Google Doodle, the autobiography Kala Gulab has acted as a catalyst to help women speak more openly about their experiences of love and marriage.

Amrita Pritam - a career of 6 decades

A writer who "dared to live the life she imagined" , Amrita Pritam published her first book of poetry when she was 16.

Amrita Pritam is best remembered for the poem 'Ajj Aakhaan Waris Shah Nu'. The poem laments the painful separation of India and Pakistan in 1947.

Amrita Pritam has published 28 novels including Pinjar. This is a dramatic story about the time when the partition was made into a movie in 2002.

Although fluent in the Punjabi language, she lives in Pakistan after partitioning and writing many books in Hindi and Urdu.

Pritam also works for Radio All India and editor of the literary magazine Nagmani.

In 1986, she was nominated to the Indian parliament.

Over the course of a six-decade career, Amrita Pritam has received numerous awards including the Bharatiya Jnanpith literary award in 1981. She was also awarded the Padma Vibushan in 2005.

In 2005, the French translation of her novel The Skeleton was awarded the La Route des Indes literary award.

She died in 2005.
