Why are people afraid of red?

American researchers believe that human obsession with red may be due to evolutionary origins.

Red may represent danger, temperature and anger. One study also found that Olympic athletes wearing red uniforms were more successful in antagonistic matches, meaning that red had the effect of "suppressing" the opponent.

A recent series of experiments by Dartmouth University (USA) experts on Psychological Science shows that the feeling of red fear of humans may be due to evolutionary origin. They measured the reaction of the Rezut monkeys as they chose food from the participants. Rezut monkeys are studied because they are primates with similar visual abilities to humans.

The team set up a number of experiments that allowed the monkey to get food from people wearing a red, green or blue t-shirt. Researchers predict the monkeys will not steal the food of the red-dressed people and they are right.

Monkeys like people wearing green or blue shirts and avoiding people wearing red clothes regardless of whether this person is male or female. Scientists believe that monkey's actions confirm that red evasion has evolved from the last common ancestor of humans to 'Old World' monkeys (ie monkeys living in parts of Asia. and Africa, unlike the 'New World' monkeys that live in South and Central America).

Although the conclusions confirm that primates avoid red, the agent makes people 'confused' with this color a mystery. Maybe the aversion to red has evolved a lot through primates and humans. It can also help primitive humans and primates to distinguish ripeness or toxins in plants and fruits.
