Bridge suicide of dogs in Scotland

A few dozen dogs have died due to jumping off a bridge in Scotland for half a century and people have yet to find the cause of their behavior.

Overtoun is the name of a bridge in Milton City, Scotland. In the past 50 years, about 50 dogs have died after jumping from the bridge to the bottom. 5 dogs jumped in 6 months in 2006, Oddity Central reported.

The position where every dog stands before jumping lies between the last two protective wall sections on the starboard side of the bridge. Another strange thing is that most of them commit suicide on sunny and cloudless days. The dogs are all like long nose like collie, retriever and labrador.

The Scottish Animal Cruelty Prevention Association (SSPCA) calls the suicides of dogs on the Overtoun Bridge as "a painful mystery".

'A lot of owners of suicide dogs are trying to figure out what caused them to jump off the bridge,' SSPCA announced.

Ben is the name of a collie puppy who jumped off the bridge in 1995 when he walked with three people. The animal did not show any signs before and during the walk. But to the position between the last two defensive walls on the right side of the bridge, it suddenly jumped down. The animal fell to the rocks about 15 meters from the bridge below. Ben's legs and spine break, and his jaw breaks. When the three owners brought the animal to the veterinarian's house, he concluded that he could not save his life.

Kenneth Meikle, another, also witnessed the same situation with his dog.

'I was walking with the kids and the Hendrix dog when it suddenly jumped off the bridge. My daughter screamed and I ran down the river bank to pick it up. The next day the vet saved it. Hendrix was lucky because it fell to a thick moss , "Meikle said.

Many hypotheses have been proposed to explain why the Overtoun Bridge has become the 'favorite dog suicide point'. A warlord with the Overtoun family built the bridge in 1895. The bridge crosses the Overtoun Burn stream and has a height of 15m. The most widely accepted hypothesis is one or more souls wandering on the bridge. A legend mentioned the Overtoun Bridge, whereby the bridge is the place where heaven and earth are closest. Due to the premonition of dogs being more sensitive than humans, they perceive the presence of heaven above clearly and lose their ability to control behavior.
