Chase alligators with magnets

The Nature Conservation Agency of Florida (USA) has just implemented a program to attach magnets to the crocodile head, to prevent them from returning to residential areas.

Many scientists believe that alligators have the ability to navigate through the earth's magnetic field. So if we attach magnets to alligator heads, their ability to sense magnetic fields will be disturbed.

Crocodiles live near many urban areas in the state of Florida and nature conservation officials have transferred them to rural marshes so as not to endanger human life. However, in recent months the status of crocodile wandering in cities tends to increase. Many have lost their lives because of car stabbing in the streets.

According to reptile experts, alligators love to live in an area from birth to death. They are capable of remembering the road very well and can return to their old place at an average speed of 16 km per week.

Florida officials had the intention of attaching magnets to crocodile heads before releasing them into marshes away from residential areas. "We attached magnets right after catching crocodiles. The results showed that they could not return to where they were captured," said Lindsay Hord, an official with the Florida State Animal Conservation Agency.

Experiment on using magnets to prevent the crocodile from returning "home" was first performed at the crocodile museum in Chiapas, Mexico. Mexican scientists say they have used this technique to move the habitat of 20 crocodiles over the past few years.

Crocodiles have been included in the list of endangered animals in the United States. But conservation efforts in the state of Florida increase their numbers over time.
