Scientists at the University of Minnesota, USA, recently announced the discovery of a metal crystal that can change shape.

This material is called 'martensite' with crystals with two different arrangements and seamless conversions. Martensite can change shape tens of thousands of times when heated and cooled, completely unlike existing materials, the BBC reported.

The new material is thought to be made of an alloy mixture of nickel and titanium. With the ability to "remember" the original shape and then when it is curved or changed, it will return to its original shape, this material is also called 'shape-remembering' material.

"You can make devices that convert heat into electricity directly with this material. It can use waste heat from computers and mobile phones to charge batteries," said Professor Richard James, one of the authors. of the study said.

With these characteristics, martensite is used in surgery or treatment of osteoarthritis diseases and equipment manufacturing is likely to be affected by temperature changes.

Martensite is a new name in the system of intelligent materials that can be used as a space medium for jet engine electronics. In addition, the goal of scientists now is to apply martensite features to make household devices.
