Scientists at the University of Aarhus (Denmark) have published amazing images of the process of digesting a python's prey with high-tech imaging technology.
By advanced imaging techniques such as CT scans and Magnetic Resonance Imaging, surprising developments within the 5 kg python have been revealed. The results are special images, representing the various organs of the python.
According to researchers, the python takes up to 132 hours to fully digest a mouse. According to observation, each part of the rat's body disappeared. At the same time, the python gut expanded, the gallbladder contracted and the heart rate increased to 25%.
Henrik Lauridsen, the study author explains: 'The increase in the size of the python heart may be related to the amount of energy it needs to digest its prey. This animal is a patient carnivore, they lie and wait. They can fast for months and then enjoy huge meals. According to calculations, they can consume the same amount of food as 50% of their body weight. In order to have enough energy for the meal, they must restart the digestive system very quickly. '
In addition, the researchers decoded the complex mechanism of activity within the python's brain. Thanks to that, they clarified many misunderstandings about the anatomy of this species.
Hansen, the co-author said: 'Visual engineering is advantageous in research, we do not have to kill animals to observe anatomy. In addition, we can regularly review the results of direct surgery. '
The project also takes photos of many other animals such as frogs, turtles, crocodiles and varanas .
Below are special images of close-up digestion of pythons:
