Make 'green energy' from E. coli

E. coli is bad for many foodborne pathogens, urinary tract infections, diarrhea and other diseases.

But scientists in Britain and Finland have recently found a way to use the bacteria to produce green energy to replace fossil fuels that are increasingly exhausted and polluting.

According to Tech Times Patria Jones (Imperial College London) and colleagues used E. coli to disrupt synthesis of fatty acids , a process that converts fatty acids into fatty acids. membrane.

By using special enzymes, the team diverted fatty acids to instead of producing cell membranes. E.coli bacteria produce propane gas that is renewable (propane is a colorless natural gas. and kerosene, used as fuel).

Jones said only five strains of E. coli were used in the process. As for why they choose to make propane, Jones says the gas can be extracted from the natural process without requiring much energy. This gas is also easy to use with existing infrastructure.

Jones's group found that their findings could pave the way for commercial production of a renewable fuel that could replace fossil fuel that is becoming increasingly depleted.

"Fossil fuels are a finite resource, and the world's population continues to grow, demanding new ways to meet rising energy needs , " Jones said.

He also said that their group is continuing to work to improve the production process of propane from E.coli at low cost and economically viable.
