Meteorites flutter through Romania's sky

The meteorite appears when the darkness is still covering and makes the capital of Buchares, southeastern Romania, glow.

According to the Romanian Space Agency (ROSA), a strong light followed a loud explosion recorded in the sky at 3:05 pm and dawn on January 7. The meteorite entering the Earth's atmosphere is the cause of this light source.

Marius-Ioan Piso, head of ROSA, estimated that meteorites exploded at an altitude of about 50-70km above the ground, through the area between Bucharest and the Vrancea region.

"This is a fairly common phenomenon. Only last night, about 30 meteors were tracked in the US, the only country with a system to monitor the activity of space objects , " RT quoted Piso. He stressed that the occurrence of meteors did not cause any damage in Romania, but raised concerns about the need for a system to observe objects that could be dangerous.

According to scientists' estimates, there are about 500 meteorites a year, mostly small, falling to the surface of the Earth.
