Revealing the first true image of a black hole
A group of researchers around the world include groups operating radio signal receiving stations and a group of scientists at Massachussets University of Technology (MIT) gathering to create the first picture of a black hole. .
This project is carried out approximately 20 years ago. The members of the project patiently search and assemble bit by bit to create the Event Horizon telescope.
We cannot take pictures of black holes because light cannot reflect or escape from it.
Each group receiving radio signals will be using a special device, assembled to receive data in the 239GHz frequency range from April 5 to April 14. These data are written to the hard drive and sent to MIT's Haystack observation station, where there is a group - using long-term basic interferometric technology - to assemble the data together. As a result, it can create a virtual image of a large radio telescope like the earth. They are currently focusing on the black hole in the center of the galaxy, called Sagittarius A *.
We cannot photograph black holes because light cannot reflect or escape from it, but the team hopes to be able to capture light around the black hole at the event horizon, before it turns lost.
Sagittarius A * is about 26,000 light-years from Earth and is thought to have about 4 million solar masses. It is believed that the event horizon is about 12.4 million miles in diameter. Despite its size, Sagittarius A * in the sky is extremely small so we need to look for radio telescopes.
Scientists believe that the resulting image will rely on the image of light around the black hole but due to the Doppler effect , it will look like a crescent. And we have to wait until 2018 to see this memorable image.
