Scientists have discovered a new exotic snail with a transparent shell like the deepest cave glass in Croatia.
Snail Zospeum tholussum transparent shell has just been discovered
These tiny creatures are certified as new species and live in one of the world's 20 deepest cave systems: Lukina Jama – Trojama in Croatia.
The newly discovered animal has a scientific name, Zospeum tholussum , which belongs to the family of snails recorded in Subterranean Biology (Biological underground).
Scientists from the University of Goethe, Frankfurt - Germany and the Croatian Biological Society could not find their bulls, guessing they were only standing in the dark in underground caves.
Tiny animals are found at a depth of 980m, in an underground cave full of soil and sand with a small stream of water flowing through. This snail species often prefers a muddy environment, close to the cave's drainage, so scientists speculate that they disperse to other places thanks to water or larger animals.
Lukina Jama – Trojama is Croatia's deepest cave system and is known for its distinctive curves, long cavities with a depth of - 1,392m.
