The appearance of the 'new seasons' and the prediction that the Earth has lost all hope of recovery
Physicists predict that Earth will become a chaotic planet, with catastrophic and irreversible consequences.
New research, published on April 21 by scientists at the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Porto, Portugal, paints a general picture of the potential human impacts on with climate. And its results are not good at all.
Climate change is pushing hurricanes to their peak frequency. In 2018, Hurricane Michael killed at least 19 people, many houses were flattened
"The effects of climate change are already obvious, but if the Earth System falls into a zone of chaotic behavior, we will lose all hope of being able to fix the problem," said researcher Orfeu. Bertolami, co-author of the study, said.
Specifically, the birth of the Anthropocene is referred to as a phase transition of life. Accordingly, most of them are familiar with phase transitions in materials, such as when an ice cube changes its phase from a solid to a liquid by dissolving into water or when water evaporates into a gas.
But phase transitions also occur in other systems. In this case, the system in question is the climate on Earth. A given climate provides regular and predictable seasons and weather, and phase transitions in the climate lead to a new pattern of weather and seasons.
Conspicuously today, many regions of the Earth are experiencing unusual climate patterns, such as unexpectedly hot in winter, or unseasonal cold spells in May and June. Researcher Bertolami said: "As the climate undergoes transitions, this means that the Earth is undergoing an abrupt change and a phase transition is underway."
The climate on Earth is gradually becoming chaotic under the hands of human influence.
To see this clearly, the researchers used a mathematical tool, called a logistics map. Logistic maps are useful in describing situations where a few variables - such as the amount of carbon in the atmosphere - can grow but in nature and reach their limit.
The best-case scenario, they say, is when humanity reaches its carbon output limit, Earth's climate will gradually stabilize to a new mean temperature, higher than current levels, and generally harmful. for humans, as it leads to more sea level rise and more extreme weather events.
In the worst-case scenario, the researchers predict that Earth's climate leads to a chaotic, unbalanced, and no repeating pattern.
A turbulent climate will have seasons that change wildly from decade to decade, or even year to year. Some years will experience sudden spells of extreme weather, while other years will be completely peaceful.
Even Earth's average temperature can fluctuate wildly. Those are the transitions we seem to be feeling as well, which are the transitions of seasons, from cooler to hotter periods, and over relatively short periods of time.
However, if this phenomenon does not improve, we will be completely unable to determine which direction Earth's climate is heading, the researchers say.
That means that any ability to control and steer the Earth System towards an equilibrium, conducive to the habitability of the biosphere will be taken away from us.
