The secret to help the leaning tower of Pisa stand before the earthquake for 800 years
Scientists have recently deciphered the secret of helping the 58-meter-tall, tilted at a 5.5-degree angle in Italy but still surviving a series of earthquakes over the past 800 years.
Pisa's leaning tower is now a popular tourist destination.
According to The Sun, the research team at Bristol University and Roma University concluded that the Pisa tower exists with such a large angle due to the phenomenon of soil structure dynamics (DSSI).
'It is the piece of land that has caused instability and caused the Tower of Pisa to collapse, which has contributed to helping this leaning tower survive seismic battles for the past 500 years,' said Professor Mylonakis of the Department of Construction at Dai. Study Bristol, who is in charge of the research team, said.
The team said that the height and stiffness of the Pisa tower combine with the softness of the ground , making the tower oscillation not resonate with earth motion during earthquakes. That is the 'key' for the existence of leaning tower for hundreds of years.
Due to the vulnerability of the structure, there is no vertical pillar, so many experts have said that the leaning tower of Pisa will be badly damaged or even collapse in seismic battles. But the amazing thing is that these situations didn't happen until now.
