The world's largest telescope will be located in Chile
The American University of the Magellan Telescope (GMT) has selected the Las Campanas area in Chile to build a second generation telescope on the ground.
This area is very popular with astronomers and places the world's most complete telescopes. The climate here is very convenient for observing the sky.
This second generation telescope opens a new era for modern astronomy with larger instruments, capable of observing the smallest and most distant celestial bodies with higher resolution than glass space prospect.
GMT will be the strongest and largest ground telescope ever built. It will be composed of a mirror with a diameter of 21.4m made up of 7 circular mirrors, each with a diameter of 8.4m. Six of these mirrors are arranged in petals around the seventh mirror.
The GMT telescope is expected to capture the first images in 2016.
