Turn ordinary people into surgeons

Experts of the European Aeronautics Agency (ESA) are trying to build a device that can support the implementation of simple surgeries in urgent conditions.

Imagine the case of an archaeologist who is eagerly surveying monuments in the deep forest in Chiapas (Mexico), then face colleagues with appendicitis. Unmatched to the hospital in such an emergency, you need to do surgery immediately. This situation can make it difficult for any explorer, no matter how brave they are.

However, everything will be resolved smoothly with CAMDASS (Computer Diagnostic and Diagnostic Assistance System). This is an ESA invention aimed at resolving an emergency in space, when an astronaut is in immediate need of surgery.

Basically, CAMDASS provides step-by-step instructions for any non-specialist surgeon so they can capture the necessary movements in emergency surgeries.

Until now, CAMDASS's prototype device was only used to perform ultrasound. The ultrasound tip is connected to CAMDASS and monitored by infrared camera, providing instant images in 3D format and the machine will generate voice guidance immediately.

Participants in the tests said that they could master complex operations, according to the GizMag website .

If completed, CAMDASS can be used in conjunction with a remote medical treatment system, enabling surgical support via satellite communications.
