Fresh fruits and vegetables are always essential for astronauts. But with a narrow space like in a spaceship, fresh foods will soon rot, and become causes of poisoning and vomiting.
NASA has partnered with Microcide - Troy Corporation, Michigan, to create a decomposing microbial product to completely disinfect vegetables before sending them to space.
The disinfectant powder called PRO-SAN is safe, stable and can clean up bacteria that cause decay. To compensate for the attraction of zero earth, the team made a concentrated powder packed in a small, soluble pack. Once put into the water, the product packaging dissolves and creates a disinfectant solution.
This type of product can also be used under normal conditions, making it free of bacterial infections such as E.coli, salmonella, listeria, cholera, shigella, staphylococcus, and streptococcus.
PRO-SAN can kill 100 million bacteria within 30 seconds, the efficiency reaches 99.99%. Freshly processed vegetables and fruits still retain the original delicious taste. Even their natural colors are preserved. In addition, this disinfectant powder can be used to clean stalls, cutting boards, sinks, cooking utensils, utensils, knives and bowls.
Therefore, the PRO-SAN is also an ideal product for hospitals, kindergartens, day care centers, dormitories, restaurants and offices.
One added convenience when using this product is that PRO-SAN does not have volatile components, so it does not contaminate the housing and kitchen environment.
