American wild boar 'invades' Mexico

Mexican officials decided to destroy about 50,000 wild pigs from the US because they sabotaged farms.

The Ministry of Environment of the state of Chihauha in Mexico said yesterday that wild pigs are destroying about 1,500 hectares of agricultural land in Ojinaga city. Those pigs come from Presidio County, Texas, USA.

'We have to eliminate wild pigs because they sleep on American soil at night and run to Mexico during the day to feed,' AFP quoted Ignacio Lagaretta, a Chihauha state official.

The Chihauha state government announces that they will use ready-made cages to trap pigs.

'The number of wild boars born has exceeded 50,000 and they are a threat to the area around Ojinaga city , ' Legaretta said.

Wild boars are imported into Texas state from Europe. In the past the American people raised them in their homes, but then many of them escaped and reproduced in the wild. The flora of many parts of Texas is seriously damaged by their presence.
