Brazil discovered 12 new animals in the Amazon rainforest

According to a reporter in South America, on June 27, scientists at the University of Sao Paulo (USP) announced the discovery of 12 species of animals and a new plant species in the Amazon rainforest area of ​​Brazil.

The animals belonging to the species of toads, lizards and owls, were first discovered in two expeditions of Brazilian scientists carried out between the end of 2017 and the last May in the river area. Negro and Branco are in the state of Roraima, near the border with Venezuela and Guyana.

The lead researcher of USP Miguel Trefaut Rodrigues said the Sao Paulo State Research Foundation (Fapsep) has funded the program to analyze more than 1,700 specimens of more than 200 species of animals and plants in the Amazon forest. price impact from water sources on the river branches to the biodiversity in the region.

In addition, the project aims to find the origin of the Loxopholis-like asexual lizards and collect data to study the evolutionary pattern of fauna in South America, helping scientists forecast risks. the extinction of those species if the Earth's temperature rises in the coming years.

The Amazon forest covers an area of ​​7 million km2 in the territory of 9 countries, of which 60% belongs to Brazil. According to statistics, more than 40,000 species of plants, 1,300 bird species and more than 4,200 species of animals live in this Amazon rainforest part of the South American nation.
