Gaofen 5 is capable of collecting spectral data from ultraviolet rays to infrared radiation with long wavelengths. This is the remote sensing satellite with the highest spectral resolution of China. It is equipped with six advanced observation devices such as shortwave infrared spectral cameras and greenhouse gas detectors. Satellite can analyze the composition of materials through super-spectral imaging technology.

Gaofen 5 was developed by the China Aerospace Science and Technology Group (CASC) and is expected to be operational for 8 years. The launch on May 9 is the 274th task of the Truong Chinh boosters.
