Complex personality of fish

New research shows that each fish is an independent individual with different personalities and behaviors.

British scientists found that each fish is a separate individual , has a complex personality and how to react to completely different changing situations, the Independent reported on September 25.

The team conducted experiments on Trinidad guppies to test how they react to external threats. The hypothesis that fish has a simple chain of reactions before danger, meaning that whether the level of danger is high or low, they basically react the same.

However, when faced with a new situation or a predator, such as a laboratory model of herons, the fish showed that they were completely separate individuals. Some of them are more brave than others.

"People often use the concept of a simple chain of reactions to explain the behavior of individual species like Trinidad guppies. But our research shows much more complex truths , " said Dr. Tom Houslay. from the University of Exeter said.

When placing fish in an unfamiliar environment, the team found they had different strategies to deal with this stressful situation. Many children tried to hide, some tried to run away, others were cautious to explore around. The differences between them are consistent across multiple attempts and in different situations.

"The behavior of all fishes varies depending on the situation. For example, they become more cautious in stressful situations. However, the relative differences between individuals remain the same , " Houslay said. .
