Discover the first amphibian insect

US scientists have discovered that some caterpillars can live indefinitely on land as well as underwater.

They only found this Hyposmocoma caterpillar in the fast-flowing freshwater (high dissolved oxygen) flow in Hawaii.

'When released into the water, these insects swam and eat. Get out of the water, they're fine. No other insects, even I think no animals can do that , 'said Daniel Rubinoff, head of the research team at the University of Hawaii.

Amphibian insects live well in strong flowing waters but will die if in calm waters

Like other moths, amphibians live in cocoons most of the time, occasionally poking their heads out to eat or move. Scientists still do not know how they can live under water because there are no bubbles in the cocoon.

'It may be that they breathe through a special organ that we haven't found yet or maybe their skin is thinner than terrestrial animals, so they breathe through the skin , ' Rubinoff said.

Some types of beetles may fall into a 'clinical death' state if they are in a water environment, while some aquatic animals such as lung fish can live on land. However, they cannot function normally for a long time, he explained.
