Dogs are afraid of fireworks

Fireworks during the holidays can frighten your pets, but their startling reactions are even more horrifying for their owners. For example, panicked dogs can leap through railing or stab into glass doors.

Lorriane Corriveau Veterinarian at Purdue University says there are ways to keep your pets from panic and avoid unfortunate accidents for them and others.

"Owners need to consider when giving pets to go to festivals with themselves. Some dogs like to run after chasing things on the ground. Others are terrified by loud sounds. The owner can Help just by simply stuffing cotton into their ears, " Corriveau said.

Here are some ways to keep pets safe when there are fireworks:

1. Never leave a dog alone outside the house, even when chained or in a fence. Dogs can find ways to escape and get lost or injured due to being stuck with the chain.

2. Store sharp objects around where the animal lies.

4. Do not bring pets outside the fireworks area.

5. Do not leave dogs in cars alone.

6. Keep the dog in a cage or tie a chain if you need to bring it.

7. Keep the dog away from unaware children that burning fireworks or waving a cannon can frighten the animal.

8. Wear identification cards for your dog so that you can find the animal again if the loud noise causes it to run away.

9. Give the dog a sedative if necessary. Noise panic will get worse as the animal gets older.

10. Pick up the remaining sharp objects or small fireworks when the festival night ends.
